I run a brand promotion business that offers a wide range of services from advertising, selling, and direct marketing to sales promotion and public relations services. Based on the demands of the business, I have been able to work with different professionals over the years. However, the competitive nature of the business has created a need to engage in the consistent recruitment of highly talented professionals.
For most Nigerian business units, particularly start-ups it is quite difficult to control operations. We experience such challenges as organizing teams, sorting out services, and getting the right professionals to offer the right services among other issues. Even with the right budget, highly talented professionals are scarce, making recruitment a high budget problem.
The problem has contributed to the failure of most business units in the country. National data showed that about 80% of start-ups fold up after three years of operation. Within the country, most of the well established states for business transactions had an average of 49.52 on ease of doing business. This showed that business owners experienced difficulty in their daily activities.
More recently, the emerging unemployment rate in the country and over the globe has led to the acquisition of skills by young and talented minds. These talented minds have turned the typical informal working economy to a 'gig' economy where they can work in the comfort of their homes and provide adequate services to employers. Across African markets, companies are pioneering business models that bridge the formal and informal sectors; in these models, each company is a formal entity but can mobilise large numbers of informal actors in their supply chains or service delivery.
In Africa, there are over 270 active service platforms ready to meet the demands of employers, creating a pool of 4.8 million talents around Africa. In Nigeria alone, about 2 million skilled professionals have benefited from these platforms and are ready to provide quality services anytime. These â€™Bridge companies are pioneering new ways of injecting efficiency and higher productivity into traditional informal markets. Almost every company has some positions that remain unfilled for a long time.
In my experience, I chose to work with - Outsourcing platforms on a short-term arrangement.
