Top practitioners and stakeholders within the Nigerian ecommerce sector have called on the Federal Government to institute a consolidated legal framework for the sub-sector to enhance its sustainability and expansion.

The call came at a webinar on ecommerce in Nigeria organised by the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Key speakers at the event led by the President of Abuja Chamber of Commerce, Prince Adetokunbo Kayode noted that most regulations and legal provisions about the sub-sector are scattered over so many instruments, leading to differing interpretations and confusion on many levels.

The speakers affirmed that such provisions and regulations should be consolidated so that a national policy on ecommerce and its national legal framework can be produced through consultation with all stakeholders.

While the speakers admitted that such policy and law are long overdue, they appealed to the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy to set the machinery in motion even as the participants also charged the organised private sector to step into the stage without delay.

Several speakers pointed attention to the increasing importance of the sector due to the pandemic, adding that Nigeria should move fast to create enabling environment to further boost the profitability and efficiency of the various ecommerce businesses.
