Nigeria is currently the second largest producer of tubers in the world with output level of 109.58mn tonnes after China (176.63mn tonnes).

One of such tubers produced is yam of which Nigeria produces 44mn tonnes and accounts for 66.7% of global output.

Nigeria’s comparative advantage in this commodity is on the back of its large population and low labour costs.

However, Nigeria has the potential to produce between 80mn-100mn tonnes of yam annually. Achieving this feat will require surmounting challenges such as pastoral conflicts and terrorism.

The slides below address these and other issues in the domestic and global commodities market.
