Nigeria British-Chamber
of Commerce (NBCC) hosted its first breakfast meeting for the year on Thursday,
January 24, 2019.
The gathering brought
together leaders of Nigeria’s local business community and provided an
opportunity for members of the Chamber to gain insight into developments that
will shape the business environment in the year.
President of Council of
the NBCC Mr Akin Olawore in his opening remarks said the nation needs to turn
under-employment to full employment.
He argued that any a
nation that had its people engaged in various jobs will be productive and
progressive.
The NBCC President
reminded the members and other stakeholders that in October, 2018 the chamber
looked at technology and jobs, especially against the background of the threat
to ‘old economy’ jobs by the onslaught of innovations such as Artificial
Intelligence and Robotics.
Olawore informed stakeholders
that the NBCC will organize an SME Forum that will focus on capacity building
and providing literacy and exposure to financial services.
The NBCC SME Forum
according to the President will hold in February, 2019.
Apart from the SME forum
Olawore also stated that the chamber will carry out an inward mission on
“Property Tech”. This will provide members and key players in the real estate
and property industry, insights into how technology is being deployed to
transform real estate.
One of the panelists at
the event Mr Austin Okere, Executive Vice Chairman of Computer Warehouse Group
reflecting on the economic outlook and business environment for 2019, described
2009 as the toughest year experienced considering the global meltdown and its
ripple effects at the time.
He believed that companies
that will make significant business impact in 2019, are the ones that are
structured, understand risk management and can meet the requirements of value
innovation.
Okere noted that the
outcome of the 2019 Presidential and state elections will be critical while
companies will price in likely results.
He emphasized the need
for businesses to adopt market creative innovation to navigate the challenging
environment in the curse of the year.
The ICT expert made a case
for a policy environment that encourages shared prosperity that will deepen the
economy.
The second NBCC
Breakfast meeting in 2019 will look at “BREXIT”.
