Cocoyam, primarily grown for their edible root
possesses high nutritional values and multiple health benefits. The antioxidant
activity and vitamins contained in its taro roots aids in boosting the immune
system, improving muscle health, enhancing visions and
eliminating dangerous free radicals from the body system.
Nigeria is the largest producer of Cocoyam
with a total output of 3.2mn tonnes which is 30% of total
global production (10.6mn) with Ebonyi, Ondo and Cross River being the major
producing states. The world top consumers of cocoyam are Nigeria, Ghana and
Cameroon where it is mostly consumed by lower and working class. This presents an opportunity for commercial investment in the production
of cocoyam.
