The demand for edible salt has been declining over time. Consumers have become more aware of the cardiovascular threat of excessive salt in meals. It is said that 40% of Nigerian adults are hypertensive.
That notwithstanding, Nigeria only accounts for a meagre 0.01% of global salt production. Rock salt deposits in Ebonyi state are still mainly underdeveloped. The Dangote group are the leading producers of edible and industrial salt in Nigeria.
