The consumption of water melon in Nigeria has increased sharply owing
mainly to its health and nutritive qualities. However, Nigeria’s output is only
0.09% of global production i.e. 50,000-100,000 tonnes.
The high moisture content of the commodity requires sophisticated
storage facilities, which is extremely expensive and requires major financial
outlay. Investment in watermelon production could potentially boost Nigeria’s
export revenue and reduce its oil dependence.
The slides below address these and other issues in the domestic and
global commodities market.
