The changing role of registrars in the evolving Nigerian capital market space, came to the fore at the 2017 edition of the Africa Prudential Plc stakeholders forum in Lagos.
It was an opportunity to explore how to leverage opportunities in the market and how it will shape the activities of registrars.
This attracted key players in the capital market ecosystem namely;regulators, market operators, shareholder group leaders, industry leaders and capital market correspondents.
Giving the opening remarks the Chairman of African Prudentials PLC Chief (Mrs) Eniola Fadayomi described the forum as an avenue for stakeholders, to examine the past, present and future level of the capital market. She said Africa Prudential has remained focus on enterprise, excellence and execution.
Chief (Mrs) Fadayomi further asserted that the company had taken seriously constant innovation to meet market demands, consistently paying dividend profits to shareholders.
Keynote speaker Mrs Toyin Sanni Group Managing Director United Capital noted that registrars had evolved from the desks of companies/financial institutions to becoming subsidiaries.
Mrs Sanni identified increased technology adoption, rapid capital market activities and the impact of regulations as key trends that have shaped the market and also the business of registrars.
She identified e-dividend and dematerialization as two key market developments, that will go a long way in shaping the operations of registrars in the Nigerian capital market.
Charting a pathway for the registrars, Mrs Sanni called on registrars to adopt technology solutions, explore the digital revolution, align the business to client model and revolutionize the traditional registrars system by developing tech products.
Sanni lauded Africa Prudential Registrars Plc for playing a critical role in advancing the registrars business in the country, through innovative market products and solutions.
Panelists Dr Afolabi Olowokere(Director, Economic Research, SEC Nigeria) Mr Bola Ajomale(MD, NASD OTC Plc), Mr Tony Anonyai (Co-CEO/MD, Planet Capital Limited) and Mrs Bisi Bakare(Pragmatic Shareholders Group) in their discourse harped on the need for registrars in the country, to embrace technology, diversify their businesses, explore the expansion of their services, utilize their database as a business case,engage in market consultancy and collaborate with other stakeholders, to drive the current e-dividend campaign.
The MD/CEO of Africa Prudential Plc Mr Peter Ashade believed his group had played a significant role in transforming the registrar business landscape in Nigeria. He told stakeholders that the planned roll out of new products in the market,was a result of the high value placed on innovation.
Head, Product Development Bridget Bayo-Ajayi in a brief presentation listed some of the viable products, that the company is launching to develop the market, namely; e-registrars solution, audience response system, virtual reporting system, green pole solution and easycoop amongst others.
