The Minister of Information and Culture Mr. Lai Mohammed has disclosed that the Federal Government is planning to regulate operations of Online News Platforms and WebTVs in the country.
Mr. Mohammed said this at the inauguration of the National Broadcasting Commission Reforms Committee in Abuja.
The seven-man committee has the mandate of implementing reforms in the National Broadcasting Commission.
The key highlights of the NBC recommendations approved by President Muhammadu Buhari include the following;
Mohammed also informed the committee that their terms of reference covers working on the regulatory and legal framework for further legislative action on the review of the NBCC Act by the National Assembly.
The NBC Reforms Committee will also publish a new sanctioning, fines and penalty regime that is in line with international best practice, that will serve as a deterrent to erring practitioners.
Professor Armstrong Idachaba, the Director, Broadcast Monitoring of the NBC, is the Chairman while Mr. Joe Mutah, Chief Press Secretary, Federal Ministry of Information and Culture, will serve as secretary.
Other members of the committee are Sir Godfrey Ohuabunwa, Ag Chairman Broadcasting Organization of Nigeria, BON, Mr J.K Ehicheoya, Director, Legal Services, Federal Ministry of Information and Culture, Hajia Binta Adamu Bello, Secretary-General, Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, ALGON, Mr Ibrahim Jimoh, Director of Administration, Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN, Hon Agbo Kingsley Ndubuisi, Board Member, NBC .
