16th IoD Nigeria President, Okunowo Pledges To Strengthen Corporate Governance In Nigeria

The newly inaugurated President of the Institute of Directors, Nigeria Chief Chris Okunowo , F. IoD has assured stakeholders that his tenure will build on the legacies of past leaders, and continue to drive integrity, world-class governance standards, and individual accountability to ensure that Nigeria becomes a global  leader in proper ethics in public and private sector corporate management.


Chief Okunowo disclosed this at his investiture as the 16th President of the institute; he pledged to uphold the values and tenets of the IoD Nigeria.


He paid tribute to the legacies of his predecessors who laid the framework for the growth and development of the institute.


Okunowo noted that he was committed to nurturing and sustaining the appropriate and preferred institutional governance culture to propel world-class corporate management through the IoD in Nigeria.


The 16th President said his executives would work with the over 4,000 members of the institute to deepen ethical conduct and transparency in the public and private sector.


Speaking further he stated that the IoD Nigeria would in 2019 target the signing of the Charter Bill by  President Muhammadu Buhari.


During his tenure, Okunowo informed members and stakeholders that the institute will review its standard operating procedures in its secretariat and other centres across the country.


He also mentioned that the institute would be actively involved in advocacy around policy formulation and implementation in the country, partnering with the private sector to engage the government on reform programs.


One area he identified as being of keen interest to the Institute would be the “Ease of Doing Business” in Nigeria, which is critical to attracting foreign direct investments into the country.


The IoD Nigeria President noted that the focus of the Institute would be to develop the “Directors Programme” as a way of improving the management capacity of members in their respective organizations, parastatals and corporations.


Understanding the fact that Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, MSMEs serve as the livewire of the economy, Okunowo said the IOD would commence its “Young Directors Forum,” YDF,  for the entrepreneurs who serve as Directors of their respective enterprises.


The Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland , Oba (Dr) Sikiru Adetona, Ogbagba II, and Chairman of the occasion, Chief Olu Akinkugbe, CFR, CON, in their video messages congratulated the 16th President of the IOD Nigeria, describing him as a honest, hardworking and principled man who will take the institute to greater heights.


Highlights of the event included the presentation of distinguished fellowship awards to former Presidents of the institute and eminent Nigerians, namely; Chief Anofi Guobadia (Late, IoD President 1983-1991), Oba Oladele Olashore, CON (Late, IoD President 1997-1999), Chief Alli Baba(Late, IoD President 1993-1995) and Chief Olu Akinkugbe, CFR, CON.


Also at the investiture, Mr. Obi Ezeude, President/CEO, Beloxxi Industries, Mr. Sam Amuka-Pemu Publisher, Vanguard Newspapers and Mr. Olutola Mobolurin Founder Capital Bancorp Limited received the 2019 IOD Nigeria Honorary fellowship awards.


Chief  Chris Okunowo served as the Honorary Legal Adviser, 2nd Vice President and 1st Vice President before he was unanimously elected the 16th President of the IOD Nigeria.
