Stakeholders at Caritas Leadership Roundtable, Emphasize Need for Ethics in PR Practice

Entrenching ethics and professionalism in the public relations practice is key for the development of the reputation management space in Nigeria. 

This was the major outcome of the deliberations of stakeholders at the maiden edition of the “Caritas Reputation Leadership Roundtable” in Lagos.

The forum which focused on the theme “Ethics, Reputation & Technology in a VUCA Economy” brought together public relations experts, media practitioners and communications advisors in corporations, organizations and institutions across the country. 

It featured a panel session which had as discussants Mr Yomi Badejo-Okusanya, President African Public Relations Association, APRA , Mr Tunji Abioye, CEO Fuel , Mr Emeka Opara, Vice-President, Corporate Communications, Airtel Nigeria and Omobolanle Victor-Laniyan of  Access Bank Plc. 

They agreed that the following issues were vital to the growth and development of the public relations practice;

  • Training and Capacity Building
  • Value for Ethics in the Profession
  • The need for increased awareness on the Dangers of Fake news
  • The PR experts to groom and nurture younger professionals through internships and other specialized knowledge sessions
  • The need for High-level professionalism in the Public relations space
  • Building Trust is Key to the development of the PR Industry
  • The Weapon of Truth in the PR space matters
  • The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations must set standards for the PR Industry.
  • The PR Industry must learn how to continually engage the media, with every sense of professionalism
  • That the PR Industry must explore how to adopt developing technology trends like Big Data to carry out their jobs effectively.
  • Nigerian public relations firms will have to re-invent themselves to compete effectively on the global stage.
  • Practitioners must imbibe the culture of cross-checking facts and news before publishing.

 

Highlights of the event was the formal launching of the book “Public Relations Thoughts and Deeds” which was reviewed by Mr Opeyemi Agbaje CEO, RTC Advisory Services. 

The author of the book and Founder/CEO of Caritas Communications Mr Adedayo Ojo said the essence of the book and the roundtable, was to showcase the public relations practice as a key vehicle for national transformation. 

Chairman of the occasion and Senior Special Assistant, Media to President Muhammadu Buhari Mr Femi Adesina believed Ethics was vital to the public relations and media space. 

Adesina said abiding by the ethos of journalism and the PR guidelines, will save practitioners from the adverse impact of fake news. 

Highlights of the event was the unveiling of the book and cutting of the Caritas Communications 10th year anniversary cake.
