Banker calls for proficiency consideration in careers

Higher proficiency consideration in choosing one's profession has been stressed as a sine-qua-non in making a success of life.

The General Manage of GT Bank Plc, Mrs. Ronke Kuye stressed this at the 2009 Career Day Celebration for students of secondary schools in and around Lagos metropolis organised by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).

Kuye stressed the importance of concentrating right from the formative years in secondary schools, on subjects where there is higher proficiency and the need to stay within a professional career path that would help a person become expert in his or her chosen field.

Kuye, who spoke on the subject "Being a Banker" explained to the students the right career path towards becoming a successful banker in Nigeria also emphasised the need for focus in achieving their goals.

Also speaking, a chartered accountant, Mrs. Bisola Longe, responding to questions from one of the participating students from Green Springs Schools concerning what happens to deposit of a customer that suddenly dies without leaving a legal will, explained that in the case of her bank, such an account is immediately frozen.

Her words: "We freeze such account irrespective of the next of kin filled by the late customer in the account opening document. The bank will wait until the family comes forward with the acceptable legal process of claiming such a deposit especially by the immediate family of the deceased."

On how banks make money, Longe explained that banks all over the world make money by charging high interest rate on lending while paying low interest on customers' deposits.

Her words: "Banks also make money from various services rendered. We make money from interest on other investments and gains from stocks' investments."

She now advised the students to be focused, study hard and listen to advice and guidance of their teachers and parents alike.

Also speaking at the event, a lawyer, Barrister Sandra Oyewole in her presentation titled "Being a Lawyer" took the students and guests through the career path towards becoming a successful lawyer while speaking on attributes of a good lawyer, practise areas of the law profession, relevance of lawyers to the society and why and how to become one.

The ACCA's yearly Career Day event had over 40 students from Green Springs Schools among other Lagos based secondary schools.

The co-ordinator of the event and ACCA Nigeria's Country Director, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Ademola disclosed that the career day is part of ACCA's adopted strategy on corporate social responsibility activities whereby youths within the operating communities of ACCA are given the opportunity to meet with career experts and ACCA certified professionals who will guide them on right career paths.

In her closing remarks, Ademola implored parents to always take cognisance of their children's endowed talents, intellect and aptitude strength, in their efforts at guiding them in the right career choices.
