It was a night of glory and applause for Nigeria ’s foremost financial institution, First Bank of Nigeria Plc (FirstBank) at the weekend as it emerged the winner of the Best Indigenous Organisation to Work for in Nigeria , and also the Best Bank to Work for in Nigeria .
The award ceremony, the maiden edition of Great Place To Work Awards in Nigeria , saw the Bank surge ahead in the ranking of notable global and indigenous companies in the “Top 10 Great Place To Work in Nigeria ” Awards which held at the Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos . Using the Trust Wheel theory which includes Credibility, Respect, Fairness, Pride and Camaraderie, participating companies were subjected to Employee Trust Survey and Culture Audit which are the same yardsticks for measuring similar awards in developed economies.
Commenting on the awards, FirstBank’s Head of Human Capital Management & Development, Mrs. Ayodele Jaiyesimi dedicated the awards to the entire staff of the Bank, and also the management for creating a conducive working environment for all workers. She said the awards represent the realisation of a vision that seeks to build a first class financial institution that compares with global organizations in terms of work culture, camaraderie, ethics and professionalism. “To everyone that has made this possible, these awards belong to you”, she said.
Mr. Ghandi Olawoye, Nigeria Chair of Great Place To Work Institute commended the management of FirstBank for building an institution which, over the years, has transformed into a national pride. He said the fact that all the companies that made the list were able to meet and even surpassed the rigorous, globally acceptable benchmark is an indication that Nigerian companies can compete with their foreign counterparts.
Great Place To Work (GPTW) is an internationally recognised organization and the world’s largest annual workplace survey, with participation from about 4,500 companies in 46 countries worldwide. These surveys culminate in the 100 Best Companies to Work for in USA , UK and Japan ; published in the Fortune 500 magazine USA , UK Financial Times and Nikkei Japan . GPTW Nigeria, the 46th affiliate in the network recently concluded the survey which identified the best companies to work for in Nigeria . The survey focused on employee/employer relationship, culture and people management practices through specific metrics embedded in the survey tools which are the key underlying criteria for a great work place.
