The tranquil nature of the Lagos Island waterfront will be energized on Sunday, April 8, 2012 as the Lagos state government, in conjunction with some private organisations, hosts the third edition of the annual Lagos Water Regatta.
Lagos Water Regatta is an annual water-based cultural sporting and recreational activity put together to showcase what the various coastal communities have to offer in terms of water sport, cultural beauty and aquatic splendor of Lagos state. It is part of the activities lined up to celebrate the 2012 edition of the Lagos Black Heritage Festival that kicks off on April 2nd 2012 till April 9, 2012.
The regatta is a private sector led initiative with support base from the organised private sector and the Lagos State Government to promote the tourism potentials of the state. One of the main objectives of the regatta, according to the organisers, is to heighten interest in Lagos state as a tourism destination.
Tourists, Lagosians and other non indigenes who have the passion for water based recreational activities are going to be treated to a pot-pouri of quality fun and entertainment as the organizers of the annual cultural festival have expanded the scope of the regatta to include a dedicated convergent point known as The Regatta Village, situated at the Waterfront area on Queen’s Drive, Oyinkan Abayomi, Ikoyi, Lagos.
The theme for this year is: LAGOS : SPLASH THE EXCITEMENT while the regatta’s driving Pay Off remains: CELEBRATING LAGOS AQUATIC SPLENDOUR.
While all activities will take place on the water, there will be a lot of side attractions taking place at the Regatta Village . There is going to be a children’s fun park, music concert pavilion, rib cracking comedy, live artiste performance and Disc Jockey raves.
The Regatta will consist of large fishing boats, ferries, barges and other marine vessels adorned with each depicting the social, cultural, traditional folklores and occupational aspects of the Lagos people.
There will be a parade of floats and canoes with traditional, cultural and social troupes from 20 communities of the five divisions that make up the state. Boats branded by sponsoring corporate organisations and jet skis from members of the Aquamarine Boat Club will participate in water racing and perform stunts to the delight of fun seekers.
According to the Chairman, Lagos Water Regatta Working Committee (organisers of the annual event), Engineer, Olusegun Jawando, prizes will be presented to winners in Boat racing, Swimming contest and Colourful boat presentation.
“In terms of security, adequate provision has been made with the Navy, Police and Ambulance boats. We are going to have participation from LASWA, All Boat Clubs in Lagos , Boat & Ferry operators in Lagos and representatives of riverside communities in Lagos .
“We are expecting over 50 thousand fun seekers to visit the Regatta Village and four other viewing centres specially created for invited guests.
“Attendance to the Regatta Village located at Queen’s Drive on Oyinkan Abayomi, Ikoyi, is free for all Lagosians and visitors from the International Communities in Lagos , tourists and Nigerians in general. The day coincide with Easter Sunday celebration, so we are expecting Easter Holiday seekers especially families who are seeking secure venues for picnics to come and splash the fun and enjoy the Lagos Water Regatta fanfare”, Engr. Jawando stated.
