Jonathan Reshuffles Service Chiefs

Abuja, Nigeria, 1330hours: Nigeria's President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan has consolidated his grip on power by appointing new leaders for the nation's military and security services.

The move cements President Goodluck Jonathan's control over powerful institutions in the run-up to next year's election.

Today, President Jonathan's office said he had replaced the leaders of the country's Air Force, Army and Navy. He also replaced the heads of the federal Nigeria Police Force and the State Security Service, the country's secret police.

The National Assembly ordinarily must approve the new military leaders before they can take over. Given the nature and sensitivity of the posts occupied however, the appointments take effect immediate from today.

Key highlights of the decision are as follows:

1. Change in leadership of the Nigerian Service Chiefs

The newly appointed service chiefs are:
i.   O.O Peterin, Air Marshal, - chief of defence staff;
ii.   O. A. Ihejirika, Major General, - chief of army staff;
iii.  O.S Ibrahim, Rear Admiral, chief of naval staff; and
iv.  M.D Umar, Air Vice Marshal, - chief of air staff.

2. Onovo and Director General Of SSS, Gadzama sacked!

President Goodluck Jonathan has carried out far reaching shake up of the police and the intelligence services today by removing the Inspector general of police, Ogbonna Onovo and replaced him with Hafiz Ringim

Mr. Ringim will act as Inspector general of Police pending his confirmation by the national assembly. Also removed is the director general of the State Security Services, Mr. Gadzama of the Yar'Adua era. He is replaced with Ita Ekpeyong.

According to the statement, the president thanked the outgoing service chiefs, whose tenures it claimed "expired in August", for their outstanding stewardship, loyalty, and defence of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
